In Morgan County, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States, Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is a state park. The park, which is located in the Crab Orchard Mountains between Wartburg and Petros, has some of Tennessee's highest mountains west of the Blue Ridge.
At 3,324 feet, Frozen Head, the park's namesake, is the highest peak (1,013 m). The name of the mountain stems from its snow-capped look during the winter months.
Black bears have also made their way into the Cumberlands, with rangers spotting them in Frozen Head. Black bears from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were released into the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area to the north in 1996 and 1997.
The Emory River serves as a useful dividing line; Frozen Head State Park is located south of the Emory, whereas easement property is located north of the Emory. Hunting is permitted on state-owned land in the Emory River Area, although it is forbidden on all properties inside the Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area.
