What is the origin of the name Obed River?

According to legend, the Obed was named after Obediah (Obey) Terril, a late-eighteenth-century longhunter who travelled across the Cumberland Plateau. This same individual, presumably, named both the Obed and the Obey rivers, and both were named the Obey.


What kind of fish may be found in the Obed River?

Several kinds of fish that may grow to be over one foot long can be found in the Obed River System. Smallmouth Bass, Long-nose Garr, Catfish, and Muskellunge are the species (also referred to as the Muskie or the Jackfish).
