Nettlecarrier Creek, which empties into the Obey River east of Alpine, created a confined valley where Alpine is situated. The valley, which is located where the Cumberland Plateau transitions into the Highland Rim, is encircled by high ridges and hills on all sides, most notably Alpine Mountain, which towers over 1,000 feet (300 m) above the neighborhood to the south. The only main route leading to Alpine is Tennessee Highway 52, which runs roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the east of Jamestown and 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Livingston.
