Early on, Buffalo Valley experienced a lot of activity. Before 1803 there was a grist mill. Three grist mills, four general stores, a pole and wood yard, multiple livestock dealers, a produce dealer, a bank, and two blacksmith shops made Buffalo Valley a major transit hub at one point. There is still evidence of this behavior today.


The town's downfall was mostly attributed to flooding. Buffalo Valley experienced two devastating floods at the turn of the 20th century, one of which destroyed a railroad bridge. The previous Buffalo Valley School turned 90 years old in 2019. The old school building, a few dwellings, an active church, an abandoned church, a downtown post office, and the flood-prone town's active church are all that are left.
