In Tennessee's Marion County, there is an unincorporated area called Guild. It belongs to the Chattanooga, Tennessee Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The former site of the Hales Bar Dam, a sizable hydroelectric project finished in 1913 by the former Tennessee Electric Power Company (TEPCO), and as a prominent location along the Tennessee River at Nickajack Lake are probably what most people associate with Haletown.


The Guild neighborhood is named after Josephus Conn Guild Sr ., a well-known engineer who oversaw dam building until his passing in 1907. In 2008, John Bogart's Classical Revival-style dam powerhouse was included in the National Register of Historic Places.


The Guild neighborhood receives its electricity from Chattanooga's Electric Power Board EPB, in contrast to much of Marion County. Due to the existence of this public utility for the community, Haletown now has some of the fastest internet speeds in the region as a result of the utility's entry into the telecom sector and provision of fiber-optic network connections for internet, television, and telephone service to its customers, including Smart Grid technology. As the first firm in the United States to provide one gigabit per second Internet speed to more than 175,000 homes and businesses, Haletown has relished becoming a part of EPB's "Gig City." This has garnered attention on a global scale and earned Chattanooga the moniker "Gig City."
