Powell is a census-designated place in Knox County, Tennessee, and was once known as Powell Station. The region is situated along Emory Road, east of Oak Ridge, southeast of Clinton, and just north of Knoxville. Powell is categorized as a populated place by the United States Geographic Names System and had 13,802 residents as of the 2020 Census. It is a part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area in Tennessee.
More of a "autonomous" small town than a suburb, Powell is regarded as such. This is due, in part, to the fact that immigrants travelling through East Tennessee on their way to the frontier founded it in 1789. President Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law Stockley Donelson (1753–1804) was one of these early pioneers. On Bishop Lane, Donelson's house still survives and is now called the Alexander Bishop House.
In Powell, the Old South's cultural impact is still evident, particularly in the city's architecture. Along Emory Road and the historic Powell communities, you can find a number of Antebellum houses. Many of the older residences in Powell's original neighborhood are thought to have served as Confederate hospitals during the Civil War.
One of the highest rates in the nation among those who did not complete high school. In spite of having lower high school graduation rates than other ZIPs, a far higher proportion of people live there and have a college degree. 21.4% just have a high school diploma.
With significant sales accounts to working at fast food restaurants, sales and service jobs account for 26.5% of the working population in the Heiskell. People's learnt shared behaviors are referred to as culture. Undoubtedly, different ancestries and ethnicities have unique cultural traditions, and as a result, neighborhoods with high concentrations of people from a certain ancestry or ethnicity will reflect that culture. It is the same reason why people love visiting Chinatown in San Francisco and the North End in Boston because of the Italian restaurants, pastries, culture, and charm.
English is the primary language used in 99.7% of homes in the Heiskell area.
