Crawl Space Moisture

Crawl Space Encapsulation: Crawl Space Moisture

Even though having puddles of water in your crawl space is certainly not something to be happy about, the water itself is not the issue. The vapor that rises from these puddles is the source of the majority of the problems. The presence of water vapor in the air is what encourages the growth of mold, brings in vermin, and drives up your water bills. In order to get rid of the water vapor, you will first need to get rid of the water. If there is water in your crawl space, you should make plans to get rid of it as soon as possible and then make any necessary adjustments to prevent it from happening again.

What is the level of moisture that is considered acceptable in a crawl space?

The humidity level in your crawl space should be lower than 55 percent. Maintaining a level of proper humidity in your crawl space is an important part of proper maintenance. A reading of up to 17 percent is typically considered acceptable for having a moderate amount of moisture. It's recommended to maintain a humidity level in your crawl space that is lower than 55 percent.

How is it that there is moisture in the crawl space?

There is evidence that the crawl space is being invaded by water or moisture. And the cause could be anything from a leaky water pipe that runs below the crawl space to high levels of humidity in the air during the hot summer months. There's also the possibility that it's groundwater from the saturated soil next to the crawl space or even inside.

How can I prevent moisture from accumulating in my crawl space?

It might take anywhere from eight to ten hours to completely dry out a crawl space that has been flooded. Warm air that is moving picks up moisture more readily than still air does. Place a source of low heat, such as a light bulb, inside the crawl space, and position one or more electric fans in a location where they will blow air across damp surfaces. This will expedite the drying process.

Is it typical for the crawl space to have some water in it?

If you live in a humid climate or an area that receives a high amount of annual rainfall, having a small amount of moisture in your crawl space may be normal. However, it is not a good idea to allow it to remain there for an extended period of time.

Does a crawl space have the ability to dry out on its own?

Simply allowing the crawl space to dry out on its own is not sufficient. You will need to make sure that the space is completely free of moisture and humidity. Use large fans to expedite the process of drying the surfaces of your crawl space. This contributes to the creation of airflow throughout the area, which helps to encourage a complete drying process.
