Crawl Space Humidity Control

Crawl Space Moisture Control: Crawl Space Humidity Control

Even when there isn't much precipitation, the humidity outside can be a significant issue for people who live in humid climates. There are many different manifestations of high outdoor moisture, and it can occur at various times of the day or year. High humidity is most likely caused by a combination of factors, including morning fog, passing rain or thunderstorms, and hot and humid summers. It is not easy to prevent high humidity from entering your home, whether through the basement or the crawl space. Controlling damp in the home is therefore essential to maintaining good health.

What is the optimal percentage of humidity for a basement or crawl space?

The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor that the air can hold at a given temperature is what we mean when we talk about humidity. For instance, the humidity levels in your crawl space should ideally be between 30 and 60 percent, with the goal being somewhere between 50 and 55 percent. Mold growth, wood rot, and pests will all be prevented if these levels are maintained.

How low of a humidity level is acceptable for a crawl space?

The majority of studies have come to the conclusion that the ideal moisture content of the wood in a crawl space should be between 10 and 16 percent. There will be some variation in the moisture levels of wood, but they should not remain either too low or too high.

In the crawl space, what percentage of humidity should I have my dehumidifier set to?

We set the humidity levels on our dehumidifiers to be between 68 and 70 percent. We frequently come across crawlspace dehumidifiers with settings that are lower than what is required. If you have hardwood flooring, levels around 50 percent are more likely to cause problems than lower levels.

Should I put in additional vent fans for the crawl space?

Increasing the crawl space's ventilation is something that numerous contractors recommend doing. It has been suggested that additional foundation fans or vents be installed so that the moist air that is contained within the crawl space can be released. The problem is that if the air outside is more humid, the crawl space will be filled with moist air because the air will flow in, rather than out. In an effort to achieve equilibrium, moist air will never stop chasing after dry air. It is not a recommended strategy for controlling moisture in your home to rely on nature to regulate the humidity in your space.

Does the closing of doors bring about a reduction in the amount of humidity in a room?

If you have a decorative door leading to your crawl space and that door has gaps in it, then the moist air from the outside will be able to enter your crawl space. Even though it looks amazing, there is a good chance that it is affecting the humidity in the room. In order to make the crawl space door more energy efficient, the material that is used for the door should be adequately insulated. We make our waterproof doors out of a marine-grade material that is three-quarters of an inch thick, and we frequently have to have them custom-made to fit the opening. In order to prevent moisture from entering, this step involves insulating the door and air sealing the door framing.
