Sagging Floors

Problems Caused By A Wet Crawl Space: Sagging Floors

It is not only visually unappealing to have uneven floors, but they can also pose a safety risk in the home. It is possible that your floors are sagging as a result of rotting wood beneath them, that one of your supports is deteriorating, or that there are issues with the foundations of your house.

If the floor starts to sink, is it possible for it to fall in on itself?

Under extreme circumstances, your feet may be unable to keep their footing on the surface of the ground. This is a possibility if your floor has been sagging for a long time and you haven't done anything to remedy the situation. When it comes to sagging home joists, however, delaying treatment will almost certainly result in a bigger problem in the long run.

Are sagging floors in a home acceptable to me as a buyer?

If you are considering purchasing a home with uneven floors, you should not put off investigating any potential problems that may exist beneath the surface of the building. The slope or slant of the floor may be a minor cosmetic issue, or it may be an indication of water damage or major structural or foundation problems with the home, depending on its severity.

Can you tell me if sloping floors are common in older homes?

Older homes with sloping floors are common, but they can also be found in homes that are between 15 and 30 years old. Generally speaking, sloping floors are caused by normal and acceptable deflection (bend) in the wood joists that support the floor's structural support structure. However, noticeable floor slopes may be an indication of a structural problem that needs to be addressed.

Are there any circumstances in which furniture may be too heavy for the ground?

Pool tables and waterbeds, for example, are high-quality but extremely heavy pieces of furniture that should not cause floor sagging.

Are there any methods of rectifying uneven floors?

Although it is difficult to repair sloped and sagging floors that have been caused by foundation problems, finding a qualified contractor to complete the work should not be difficult. Several options are available, including lifting the floor joists and installing supports; alternatively, jacking up the entire house and installing new footers can be used.
