Morgan County, Tennessee's Frozen Head is a mountain. At 3,278 feet, it is the second highest mountain in the Crab Orchard Mountains. The Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area is home to Frozen Head.
At 3,324 feet, Frozen Head, the park's namesake, is the highest peak (1,013 m). The name of the mountain stems from its snow-capped look during the winter months.
Black bears have also made their way into the Cumberlands, with rangers spotting them in Frozen Head. Black bears from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were released into the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area to the north in 1996 and 1997.
Frozen Head State Park has one of the quietest and most comfortable frontcountry campgrounds I've visited recently, as well as plenty of swim and splash spots for kids (and adults) on a hot summer day, a fantastic 360-degree lookout tower for fall colors, and dog-friendly trails that my dog still fantasizes about.
