The descent is a steep downhill trudge for an hour straight, praying not to roll your ankle on the uneven pavement remnants and fall off the cliff.
The climb to the waterfall is 2.6 kilometers roundtrip and is considered somewhat challenging. The climb to the waterfall and back takes around 2 hours.
At the time of writing, there is no cost to visit Laurel Falls, no need to make reservations, and parking is free. The National Park Service ran a test operation at the site last fall, from Sept. 7 to Oct. 3, 2021, to reduce traffic congestion.
On the road to Cades Cove, you'll pass by Laurel Falls. The Sinks and Meigs Falls are two further waterfalls that can be seen on the way to Cades Cove.
I'd combine this waterfall trek with one or more of the local outdoor activities, similar to Mooney Falls. Plan to swim in one of two swimming holes located here, as opposed to Mooney Falls. Due to its location at the base of the main, two-tier falls, the first swimming hole will be rather evident.
